1st June 2008: Nine vegetable producers from the district of Cono Este, Lima, Peru, have grouped together to open an urban agriculture production center for the cleaning and preparation of organic vegetables.
The opening of the new center is the next stage in one of the initiatives of the UH/PCIP Agricultores en la Ciudad (Farmers in the City), which recently provided training and support through urban farmer field schools for growers in the production of organic produce. Having achieved organic certification standards, the producers now have a clean, healthy environment from which to prepare and market organic vegetables to the local community. The NGO Ecologia Peru is assisting the group by acting as intermediaries in sales to other outlets.
The production center in Carapongo, Lima, was officially opened by the Mayor of Chosica and the director of Ecologia Peru.
